Karichal Chundan, captained by Tommy Antony and rowed by Y’s Men’s Club, Vyttila, emerged winners of Champakkara Boat Race-2013, organised by Eroor-Perikkad Boat Club, Maradu Municipality and Kochi Corporation, in Champakkara backwaters on Sunday.
The winners were presented the coveted T K Ramakrishnan Trophy by Maradu Municipal Chairman T K Devarajan. However, goof-ups by the organisers mellowed down the thrill of the boat race.
Some spectators remarked that the organisers had failed to stick to the time schedule of the competitions and the finale was delayed for more than a hour. Moreover, the finale of the snake boat category was held in a tense situation as an ‘A’ grade boat sank at the finishing point.
“There was nobody to take away the sunken boat from the track of the final competition. I feared that three snake boats and the ‘A’ grade boat would collide at the finishing point,” a spectator said.
However, the smart oarsmen prevented a mishap and presented a photo finish to the spectators in the finale.
Apart from the powerful performance of Karichal Chundan, the performance of Thanniyan, captained by K R Ratheesh and rowed by Thandoni Thuruthu, was another highlight of the race. They edged out St Sebastian No. 1 to emerge winner in the ‘A’ grade boat category.
In the ‘B’ grade boat category, Jibi Thattakan, captained by V S Roopesh and rowed by Korumkotta Boat Club, came first and Sreemurugan, led by Vishak Sabhu and rowed by Thaniyam Yuva Sakthi Boat Club, stood second.
As many as 23 boats, including four snake boats, had participated in the competition. Excise Minister K Babu inaugurated the boat race. Actor Manoj K Jayan was the special guest of the programme.
